Accessibility

This website does not meet WCAG 2.2, however efforts have been made to enhance the accessibility of the site.

This website has been built on the Format platform - a content management system designed specifically for designers and photographers. Whilst it is a great platform for managing my portfolio, it does have some significant accessibility drawbacks. Sadly, I didn't identify these drawbacks until I had committed transferring my portfolio to the platform.

I have personally raised the accessibility issues with Format on multiple occassions. I have made them aware of the legal implications of platforms not being accessible both in the EU and USA, and asked them to prioritise these issues accordingly. As of yet, I am not aware of any of the issues I have raised being addressed - only that they are in their product backlog, and that they are working very hard on them.

I will continue to raise these issues with Format until a point where they are either addressed, or I find a comparable platform that does priorities the needs of disabled users, and allows my to conveniently transfer my portfolio and domain across.

Things I am aware of:

  • By default, the Format platform sets the site logo/branding as the first heading (Heading Level 1) of every page, meaning screen reader users will struggle to distinguish one page from the next
  • The built in text editor only caters for two levels of heading within a page - a Heading Level 2, and a Heading Level 3. As a result, some content pages may not have an as in depth heading hierarchy as I would like
  • HTML Landmarks have only been partially used, so there is no "main" region to the pages
  • There is no "skip to content" link functionality available
  • The shopping cart functionality is only visually hidden from pages, meaning it may be of detriment to those using assistive technology

Things I have done:

  • Manually modified the styling for the site to cater for dark mode - something Format doesn't natively offer.
  • Included Alternative text on my photographs as best I can
  • added clear focus states to navigational elements
